HOW CAN I BE A GREAT BOSS?
Hi Shesh, thanks for the great CEO Chronicles articles! May I trouble you for some advice – I have just been promoted and now lead a team. How can I be a great boss?
CARE, COACH, COMMUNICATE, CONSTRUCT

Great bosses have many amazing qualities; let me list the ones I think you should start with.
First, CARE. Take an interest in your team, professionally and personally. Get to know them, understand them and their aspirations. Then, empathize with them. And always challenge them and check in with them.
Second, COACH. You are inheriting your team. Not all of them are likely to be stars. Give each of them the encouragement (or prodding) that will benefit them most. Try to customise yourself to their different personalities and mindsets. Become what is best for them.
Third, COMMUNICATE. Open the door, physically and figuratively. Let your team in. Be approachable. Then, be accepting. Finally, be appreciative. Most importantly, listen to them.
Fourth, CONSTRUCT. Your team is going to deliver the results you need, not you. Build the right environment for them. Give them the tools and resources they need. Demand and reward effort, not perfection. Finally, give them the credit and keep the blame.
Remember the oft-quoted saying, “Leadership is not a position or title; it is action and example…”
Then, lead from the front, and have their backs.
